5S is the vocabulary most heard by those who run the profession in the manufacturing world. As an employee of the manufacturing industry certainly 5S concept that comes from the Japanese language is already attached and continue to run. 5S is meant in the Japanese language such as Seiri, Seiton, Sheisou, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke. The concept is mostly run on the company both domestic and foreign companies because it has a large contribution to the success of a company.
5S is often known only to the hygiene philosophy imposed by the Japanese. In fact this concept is not so, 5S is not just a way used to just clean the plant or workplace but as a way to organize, how to manage the workplace, repair and pruning unnecessary operational processes. Workplace area management effectively and efficiently is part of 5S.
In addition, the company must also manage the workplace area as well as manage the work patterns to be more effective and efficient. Companies are also advised to cut off all forms of waste and make workflow improvements. Pruning all unnecessary processes at once to trim irrational operations is expected to keep company costs down.
The 5S concept also teaches about the pattern of discipline that is continuous and do not know surrender. Discipline leads to a good work ethic for employees, in any discipline is very necessary even when they have to sell products in the market, discipline also needs to be done. The concept of 5S may help you to increase sales within the company even in the implementation still requires patience.
In the execution of 5 S there are some keywords that must be understood, namely:
1. Make changes to work morale
2. Safety work
3. Work efficiency

The 5S program was first introduced in Japan as a movement of determination to sort (seiri), arrangement (seiton), cleansing (seiso), guarding steady conditions (seiketsu), and self-awareness of the habits necessary to perform the job well ( shitsuke). Every S in 5S and its clarification are portrayed underneath.
1S – Seiri
5s Seiri is the initial step of execution of 5S, specifically: arranging of helpful and pointless merchandise:
Handy stuff => Saved
Items not useful => Removed
In this first step known as Red Tag Strategy, which marks the goods that are not useful with red label (red tag) to be easily distinguished from the items that are still useful. The items with the red label are then removed from the workplace. The leaner (lean) of the workplace of unneeded items, the more efficient the workplace will be.
2S – Seiton
5s-seiton Seiton is the second step after sorting, namely: the arrangement of useful items easy to find, and safe, and given an indication.
In this second step is known the term Signboard Strategy, which is placing useful items neatly and regularly then given an indication or explanation of the place, the name of the goods, and how much the goods so that when the goods will be used easily and quickly accessed. Signboard strategy reduces waste in the form of movements fro searching for goods.
3S – Seiso
5s-seiso Seiso is the third step after the arrangement, namely: cleaning of items that have been arranged neatly so as not to dirty, including workplace and environment and machine, both breakdown machine and in the program of preventive maintenance (PM).
As much as possible the workplace is made clean and shining like an exhibition space for a healthy work environment and comfortable so as to prevent the motivation of work down because of dirty and messy workplace.
4S – Seiketsu
Seiketsu 5s-seiketsu is the next step after seiri, seiton, and seiso, namely: guarding a clean and tidy working environment into a standard work. The circumstances achieved in seiri, seiton, and seiso processes must be standardized. These standards should be easily understood, implemented throughout the organization, and regularly and periodically checked.
5S – Shitsuke
5s-shitsuke Shitsuke is the last step, that is self-awareness of work ethics:
• Discipline against standards
• Mutual respect
• Shame to commit a foul
• Pleased to make improvements
The success of 5S lies in the extent to which people do 5S as a habit rather than coercion so that improvement initiatives will emerge by themselves.
